Organic

Growing in popularity, organic food satisfies demand for a generation increasingly concerned about what goes in their food and how it is produced.

The word organic actually refers to the way that the product ingredients are grown. This means working with nature and not trying to control it. Natural methods of pest control (for wildlife and insects) are used on crops and animal health is maintained via natural remedies and homeopathy. Use of artificial chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers and genetically modified crops (G.M.) are strictly restricted.

To maintain yields in crops, soils are kept healthy by crop and livestock rotation. However, crops tend to produce less yields than modern intensive methods of growing, but in the end are better for the environment, ensuring it remains sustainable for generations to come.

For any product to claim to be organic it must be proved that every ingredient can be traced back to source. Strict guidelines are defined by both UK and European law to use the word 'organic' and an organic body must have certified the product. In the UK the main certification mark is that of the Soil Association.
