Vegan / Vegetarian
Kallo has a number of products suitable for both Vegans and Vegetarians.
There can be a lot of confusion between the definition of vegan and vegetarian.
Today, the most commonly accepted definition of a vegetarian is a person who consumes only vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, seeds and pulses, and includes eggs and dairy foods. This is more accurately called ovo-lacto vegetarianism. A vegan refers to a person who does not consume, and avoids the use of all products derived from animals. These include all dairy foods, such as milk and cheese, as well as honey, eggs and animal fats. A vegan would only consume vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, seeds and pulses.
Currently, voluntary labelling of vegetarian and vegan foods is common, but not compulsory. In the UK, the Vegetarian Society has a labelling system, where foods that meet the Society's strict criteria can be identified by a V symbol on the packaging, which means "approved by the Vegetarian Society".
People are vegans or vegetarians for all kinds of reasons. Some people simply don't like the taste of meat, others may have a food allergy or intolerance, for a few people it may be a moral choice such as animal rights. Whatever the reason, if you or a member of your family plan to follow a restrictive diet you should consult your GP or a dietician for professional advice on how to manage your diet.
